Common questions about our services
How much does plastering cost in Sydney?
Supply and installation of plasterboard on a new home or a renovation starts at $35 per square metre, which covers both the sheets and the labour. A small wall repair, roughly a hole the size of an apple, starts at $100, and moves from there with the size of the hole, what the wall is made of and where in the house it sits. A bulkhead of about three metres by one metre is around $500 for the gyprock lining, meaning sheeting and setting something already framed. Suspended ceilings and commercial work are priced from the drawings instead, because a steel grid ceiling and a shop fitout vary too much for a rate to mean anything. Quotes are free and there is no travel charge to any suburb we work in.
What is the difference between plasterboard and gyprock?
Nothing, in practice. Gyprock is CSR's brand name for plasterboard and it has been used in Australia for so long that the whole trade is called gyprocking, in the same way people say Esky or Biro. Plasterboard is the generic term for the same product, a gypsum core faced in paper. We use Gyprock along with Knauf and Siniat board depending on what the job calls for. If somebody quotes you for gyprocking and somebody else quotes for plasterboard, they are quoting the same work.
Do you paint the walls after plastering?
No. Walls and ceilings are sanded and left ready for the prime coat, and painting is a separate trade you engage yourself. We say it here because it is the single most common thing people assume is included, and finding out on the day the plasterers pack up is a poor time to learn it. If matching existing paint matters, it is worth having a painter lined up before we finish rather than after.
Do you supply the plasterboard, or do I?
We do, on every job. The plasterboard, the cornice and the jointing compounds are delivered as part of the work and are included in the quoted price, so there is nothing for you to order, collect or store on site. That covers the specialist boards too, including wet area lining, fire rated board and acoustic sheeting where a job calls for them. Where materials are dropped at the property ahead of the work, keeping them dry until we arrive is the one thing we would ask of you.
How long does a plastering job take?
Most residential jobs are finished in one to two days on site. A single storey three bedroom new house, covering living areas, wet areas and cornice, runs to two or three days. What sets the pace is the jointing rather than the number of people: the system is three coats and each one has to dry before the next goes on, so a second plasterer does not halve it. On a warm dry week each coat is dry inside an hour and the sequence runs straight through. In a wet week, or in a closed up house with no airflow, the drying is what you are waiting on. Our hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5:30pm.
Which Sydney suburbs do you work in?
We cover the Sydney metropolitan area, from the south west growth corridor through to the Eastern Suburbs, the North Shore, the Hills and the Sutherland Shire. Thirty six suburbs have a page of their own covering the housing stock and the plastering faults that come up most often there. There is no travel charge to any suburb we cover, so the price quoted is the price paid regardless of which side of the city you are on.
