Plastering service areas across Sydney

We plaster across the whole Sydney metropolitan area, from the south west growth corridor through to the Eastern Suburbs, the North Shore and Northern Beaches, the Hills, the Inner West and the Sutherland Shire, with no travel charge to any of it. Thirty six suburbs have a page of their own below, each covering the housing stock in that area and the plastering faults that come with it, because a Federation terrace, a walk up flat and a house on reactive clay do not fail in the same way.

Central and Inner Sydney

We cover the centre of Sydney and the inner suburbs, from the CBD and Pyrmont through Surry Hills and Marrickville out to Burwood, Strathfield and Sydney Olympic Park. The work here leans towards renovation rather than new build, along with ceiling, wall and cornice repairs. The thing that shapes almost every job in this part of Sydney is how the material gets in. A goods lift, a dock booking, a 1930s stair or a terrace hallway under four metres wide all decide the sheet length before anybody picks up a tool, and that decides how many joints your ceiling ends up with. The other is age: much of the inner stock predates damp proof courses and modern framing, so what looks like a plastering fault is often the building telling you something else, and getting that diagnosis right is worth more than the repair.

Suburbs include: Sydney CBD, Pyrmont, Surry Hills, Marrickville, Burwood, Strathfield and Sydney Olympic Park

The Eastern Suburbs

Our coverage takes in the Eastern Suburbs, including Bondi, Double Bay and Randwick. Almost every job out here is inside somebody else's building rather than on a block of land, because these three suburbs are between two thirds and three quarters apartments. Two things follow that do not apply anywhere else we work. Cracking in the older blocks is very often the steel inside the structure corroding rather than a plastering fault, and patching it means the building pays twice. And light coming off water is flat and directional enough that the finishing standard calls for a higher level of finish than the residential default, which is a specification to settle before painting rather than an argument to have afterwards.

Plastering in The Eastern Suburbs

North Shore and Northern Sydney

We work across the North Shore, the Northern Beaches and the northern suburbs, from North Sydney, Mosman and Manly through Lane Cove, Chatswood, Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby to Macquarie Park, Ryde and Castle Hill. Renovations, additions and soundproofing between rooms make up most of the work. The thing that separates this side of the harbour from the west is the ground. Most of it is sandstone rather than reactive clay, so the seasonal soil movement that explains almost every crack out west usually is not the answer here, and reaching for it is the common local error. What replaces it is a lath and plaster ceiling that has lost its key after a century, framing that has shrunk since it was sheeted, an addition sitting on separate footings, or moisture in a shaded gully. On the harbour and the ocean it is salt and the steel inside the wall. We diagnose before we quote, because up here the obvious answer is usually the wrong one.

Suburbs include: North Sydney, Mosman, Manly, Lane Cove, Chatswood, Ku-ring-gai, Hornsby, Macquarie Park, Ryde and Castle Hill

Western Sydney

Our service area covers Greater Western Sydney, including Parramatta, Blacktown, Merrylands, Fairfield, Liverpool, Bankstown and out to Penrith. New build and renovation work sit side by side here, so the job might be sheeting a whole house on a new frame or repairing a single damaged ceiling. What these seven suburbs share is heat and clay, and almost nothing else. Parramatta is nine tenths apartments and the highest earning suburb we cover; Fairfield, twenty minutes away, is the lowest. Blacktown is still mostly houses while Liverpool is two thirds units. Penrith is a rental town centre rather than the backyards everyone pictures. We do not run one western Sydney story across them, because the honest answers are different in each.

Suburbs include: Parramatta, Blacktown, Merrylands, Fairfield, Liverpool, Bankstown and Penrith

South West and Macarthur

The south west corridor and the Macarthur region, including Austral, Leppington, Oran Park, Camden and Campbelltown, is where most new housing in Sydney is going up. New home plasterboard installation is the bulk of what we do out here, on both timber and steel framed houses, and there is no travel charge for any of it. What the corridor is not is uniform: three of those five suburbs are barely a decade old, one is a heritage country town where much of the original plaster is not plasterboard at all, and one is built largely of government housing from the 1970s and 80s. The one thing they share is the reactive clay underneath them, which is behind most of the cracking in all five.

Suburbs include: Austral, Leppington, Oran Park, Camden and Campbelltown

Southern Sydney and St George

We cover the Sutherland Shire and the St George area, including Cronulla, Miranda, Sutherland and Hurstville. Renovation work, wet area lining and ceiling and cornice repairs make up most of what we do here. What is worth knowing is how little these four have in common. Cronulla is an ocean peninsula where the exposure changes depending on which way a building faces. Miranda is the one that owns its houses, so the work is additions and renovations rather than turnaround. Sutherland is where people buy their first unit. And Hurstville, twenty minutes from Cronulla, is a high rise station suburb where fewer than one in five residents speaks only English at home. We do not run one story across the four of them.

Frequently asked questions about our Sydney service areas

Do you cover all of Sydney, or only certain suburbs?

The whole metropolitan area, from the south west growth corridor at Austral, Leppington and Oran Park through to the Eastern Suburbs, the North Shore and Northern Beaches, the Hills, the Inner West and the Sutherland Shire. Thirty six suburbs have a page of their own, listed below, and the rest are covered by whichever of those they sit closest to.

Does the price change depending on which suburb I am in?

Not for travel, no. We do not add anything for distance, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay whether the job is ten minutes away or an hour. What genuinely does move the price is access rather than postcode: a full length sheet that has to turn a stair in a walk up, or fit a lift car in a tower, means the ceiling is built from more pieces than the same room in a house with a driveway, and those extra joints have to be backed properly. That is why we ask what the building is before quoting.

Why does each suburb have its own page?

Because the plastering problems genuinely differ, and a page per suburb is only worth having if it says something a general page could not. An inter war flat in Bondi has steel in the walls that corrodes and cracks the substrate from inside. A cottage in old Camden may not be plasterboard at all, but lime render on solid masonry, which is another trade entirely. A house in Penrith deals with compound flash drying in extreme heat while one in Manly deals with the opposite, coastal humidity that slows curing and lifts paint months later. Each page is written from research for that area rather than from a template with the name swapped.

My suburb is not listed. Can you still come?

Almost certainly, if it is inside the Sydney basin. The thirty six pages below are the areas we get asked about most, not the limit of where we work, and if your suburb is not among them it will usually be covered by the nearest one. Somewhere well outside the basin is worth a phone call before you plan around it rather than an assumption either way.

When can I reach you?

Our hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5:30pm. A call outside those hours reaches a voicemail rather than being missed, and the quote form on this site takes a job at any hour, including photographs and floor plans, which is usually the faster route to a price anyway.
